A Culligan whole house water filter is two different products sold under one name. On the shelf it is a sediment housing priced $34.99 to $119.99 (culligandiy.com, Oct 5, 2026) whose heavy-duty carbon cartridge is rated for 10,000 gallons; from a Culligan dealer it is a media tank with certified filters and no published price. For certified chlorine reduction at every tap, a media tank bought direct is the better buy, and our whole house water filters guide explains why the design of a system matters more than the logo on it.
The short answer
as of Oct 5, 2026Is a Culligan whole house water filter worth buying?
It depends which Culligan you mean. The retail housings (WH-S200-C at $45.99, WH-HD200-C at $73.55 on Oct 5, 2026) are solid sediment filters, but their two carbon cartridges claim chlorine taste and odor only, and the 10,000-gallon RFC-BBSA lasts about 5 to 7 weeks for an average family by our arithmetic on EPA data. Culligan's dealer systems carry real NSF/ANSI certifications and service, with no price published anywhere. For chlorine at every tap, the SpringWell CF1 at $1,160.25 (Oct 5, 2026) totals about $1,560 over ten years, against roughly $2,470 to $3,370 for the heavy-duty Culligan carbon route.

Key takeaways
- Culligan's retail whole house housings cost $34.99 to $119.99 on culligandiy.com (Oct 5, 2026), and the only certification their pages cite is for structural integrity.
- The heavy-duty RFC-BBSA carbon cartridge is rated 10,000 gallons, about 5 to 7 weeks of an average family's water by our arithmetic on EPA figures.
- Culligan's dealer filters publish certifications and per-component warranties but no price; Modernize put a Culligan carbon add-on at $500 to $2,000 (read Aug 31, 2026).
- Ten years of the heavy-duty retail carbon route runs about $2,470 to $3,370, against about $1,560 for a SpringWell CF1, our arithmetic at Oct 5, 2026 prices.
- Neither Culligan line softens water. The word scale on the retail box means loose flakes, not dissolved hardness.
Which Culligan Whole House Filter Are You Looking At?#
Two businesses share the name, and they answer different questions. CulliganDIY.com, which its About page says is run by ZeroWater (Zero Technologies LLC), a company in the Culligan International group, sells housings and cartridges with prices on them. Culligan.com sells through local dealers, and each whole-home filter page we read ends in the same button, which schedules a free water consultation.
The same retail part numbers turn up at Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart and Amazon in Google results on Oct 5, 2026. We didn't read those retailers' prices, so every retail figure on this page is Culligan DIY's own, read the same day.
Culligan retail (CulliganDIY and store shelves)
- $34.99 to $119.99 per housing, prices published (Oct 5, 2026)
- Cartridges you change yourself, every few weeks to months
- Sediment, plus chlorine taste and odor on two carbon cartridges
- Certification cited: structural integrity of the housing
Culligan dealer systems
- No published price; a quote follows a free in-home water test
- Backwashing or dual-tank media, serviced by the dealer
- WQA-certified to NSF/ANSI 42 (chlorine taste and odor) or 53 (total PFAS)
- Layered warranty, with one year on the entire system
Which one fits
Buy the retail housing as a sediment filter. Call the dealer when a lab test names a specific contaminant such as PFAS and you want someone else to own the maintenance.
Culligan Whole House Filter Models and Prices#
Five housings make up the whole retail range, in two sizes. Standard-duty models fit a 3/4-inch main and take cartridges rated at 4 GPM; heavy-duty models fit a 1-inch main, take 4.5-inch-wide cartridges with what Culligan calls four times the dirt-holding capacity, and are rated up to 10 GPM.
| Housing | Price (Oct 5, 2026) | Main line | Rated flow | Cartridge in the box | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| WH-S200-C, valve-in-head | $45.99 | 3/4-inch | 4 GPM | P5, 5 micron | 2 years |
| HF-360B, valve-in-head | $69.99 | 3/4-inch | 4 GPM | P5, 5 micron | 5 years |
| HF-150A, opaque | $34.99 | 3/4-inch | Set by cartridge | None | 5 years |
| WH-HD200-C, heavy duty | $73.55 | 1-inch | Up to 10 GPM | None | 2 years |
| HD-950A, heavy duty | $119.99 | 1-inch | Up to 10 GPM | None | 5 years |
The WH-S200-C is the part number people search for most, about 500 times a month on our keyword data. Its built-in bypass valve shuts the water off at cartridge time, and the P5 it ships with is a 5-micron spun polypropylene cartridge rated for 8,000 gallons or 2 months.
Only two cartridges in the whole-house range claim anything beyond particles. The SCWH-5 carbon-paper cartridge ($19.99 for two) fits the standard housings and is rated 15,000 gallons or 3 months at 4 GPM. The RFC-BBSA radial carbon cartridge ($29.99) fits the heavy-duty housings, is rated 10,000 gallons at 8 GPM, and showed out of stock on Oct 5, 2026. Both claim "aesthetic chlorine taste & odor," which is the language of a taste improvement rather than a contaminant claim.
Size decides what a filter can reach
as of Oct 5, 2026- Culligan sediment cartridges5 to 50 micronP5 at 5 micron, S1A at 20, CW-MF at 30 and R50-BBSA at 50, per Culligan's product pages. They strain sand, rust, silt and loose flakes of scale, which protects fixtures and anything plumbed downstream.
- Culligan carbon cartridges5 to 25 micronSCWH-5 carbon paper at 5 micron and RFC-BBSA radial carbon at 25 micron. Both strain particles like a sediment cartridge and add chlorine taste and odor reduction by adsorption.
- RO membrane0.0001 micronThree orders of magnitude finer than any cartridge on this chart, which is why reverse osmosis is the only stage shown here that reaches dissolved solids.
Micron ratings are Culligan's nominal figures from culligandiy.com product pages, read Oct 5, 2026. Reference sizes are public orders of magnitude, not measurements of your water.
The certification line deserves a second look. Every housing page says it was "Tested and Certified for structural integrity" by WQA or IAPMO, which means the housing holds pressure without failing. None of the housing or cartridge pages we read cites an NSF/ANSI contaminant-reduction standard, so treat the carbon claim as the manufacturer's word.
What you hear
The box says it filters scale, so it handles my hard water.
What the numbers say
Culligan lists scale among what these cartridges catch, meaning loose flakes already broken off inside the pipes. Hardness is calcium and magnesium dissolved in the water, and dissolved minerals pass through any sediment or carbon cartridge. Removing them takes ion exchange in a softener.
If spotting and crusted fixtures are the real complaint, you don't need a filter. Read how hardness actually works, then price a water softener instead.
How Often Should You Change a Culligan Whole House Filter?#
At the gallon rating or the month limit, whichever arrives first, and on a whole house the gallons usually arrive first. Culligan prints both numbers on every cartridge, and for a typical family the month figure isn't the one that binds.
The RFC-BBSA page also contradicts itself on time, listing 3 months in the specifications and "up to 6 months" in the description. The gallon figure is the same in both places, so that's the one to plan around. Clear housings help here, because a sediment cartridge shows its load before your shower pressure does.
100x
That ratio is the entire argument between cartridge and tank designs, and we run it across every system we track in our cartridge-versus-tank cost math.

How Much Does a Culligan Whole House Filtration System Cost?#
The retail route is $34.99 to $119.99 for the housing plus cartridges. The dealer route has no published price anywhere: Culligan's own FAQ asks "How much does a whole home water filtration system cost?" and answers that "the price can vary based on which water filtration system you choose," then points to purchasing, renting and financing.
The closest dated figures we hold come from Modernize's Culligan cost page, read Aug 31, 2026: a carbon filtration add-on at $500 to $2,000, iron filtration at $1,000 to $2,500 and reverse osmosis at $1,000 to $3,000. Modernize blocked our reader on Oct 5, 2026, so those ranges carry their August date. How those add-ons stack inside a full dealer quote is laid out in what a Culligan softener quote contains.
What Culligan does publish, it publishes clearly. Here is what its dealer product pages said on Oct 5, 2026.
| Dealer system | What the page publishes | What it does not |
|---|---|---|
| Aquasential Smart HE Water Filter | Three media choices (Filtr-Cleer sediment, Cullar carbon, Cullneu acid neutralizer); Cullar rated 4.0 GPM (9-inch) or 5.9 GPM (10-inch); WQA-certified to NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine taste and odor up to 120,000 or 180,000 gallons; backwash uses about 40 to 110 gallons per recharge on Cullar | A price, or a chloramine certification |
| Aquasential Whole Home PFAS Filter | WQA-certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for total PFAS; 158,000 gallons certified capacity; 7.5 GPM; dual tank, no backwash, no wastewater | A price, or the cost of a media change |
| Select Series and Select Plus | Cullar certified to NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine taste and odor up to 100,000 gallons (8-inch) or 130,000 gallons (10-inch) | A price |
Warranties are layered by component. On the Smart HE filter, the Quadra-Hull tank is covered for life, the circuit board, the fiberglass tank and the control valve body (excluding internal parts) for 10 years, the meter for 5 years, and the entire system for one year. Each of these pages also carries a 30-day guarantee under which "Culligan will remove the product and refund the purchase price," a more generous exit than SpringWell's, which takes back uninstalled systems only and charges a restocking fee.
One honest point in Culligan's favor. If PFAS is the reason you're shopping, WQA certification to NSF/ANSI 53 for total PFAS on a whole-home system is a strong paper trail, and Culligan describes it as one of the only whole-home systems that has it. Do the math on its capacity first, though. At EPA's average household use, 158,000 gallons passes in roughly 17 to 25 months, our arithmetic, so the price of a media change belongs in the quote.

Is the Culligan Whole House Water Filter Good?#
The retail housing is a good sediment filter and a weak answer to whole-house chlorine. The dealer system is credible, certified hardware sold at a price you cannot compare until someone has visited your kitchen.
What we like
- Retail housings cost $34.99 to $119.99, with published prices and 2- or 5-year warranties (culligandiy.com, Oct 5, 2026)
- Heavy-duty 1-inch housings take 4.5-inch cartridges rated up to 10 GPM, a fair sediment stage in front of a tank system
- Dealer media is WQA-certified to NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine taste and odor, or 53 for total PFAS
- Dealer systems carry a 30-day guarantee: Culligan removes the product and refunds the purchase price
What to watch
- Retail carbon cartridges claim chlorine taste and odor only, and the RFC-BBSA lasts about 5 to 7 weeks on average use (our arithmetic)
- The only certification cited on the retail pages is structural integrity of the housing
- No dealer price is published anywhere, so every comparison starts after a sales visit
- Backwashing dealer tanks need a drain and use about 40 to 110 gallons per recharge on Cullar media
- The entire-system warranty line on dealer filters is one year
The same dealer logic applies to Culligan softeners, which we priced and rated separately in our Culligan softener review.

What Are the Better Options Than a Culligan Whole House Filter?#
For chlorine and chloramine at every tap, a 1,000,000-gallon tank bought direct. The SpringWell CF1 was $1,160.25 on Oct 5, 2026 (against a $1,365 list price), rated 9 GPM for 1 to 3 bathrooms, with a sediment pre-filter every 6 to 9 months as its only routine cost.

SpringWell
SpringWell CF1 Whole House Water Filter
Best for: City-water homes that want chlorine, chloramine and PFAS handled house-wide with the lowest 10-year cost of ownership
- Capacity
- 1,000,000 gallons / ~10 years
- Flow rate
- 9 GPM
- Bathrooms
- 1 to 3
- Media
- Catalytic carbon + KDF + sediment, 4 stages
- Reduces
- Chlorine, chloramine, PFAS/PFOA/PFOS, VOCs
- Sediment pre-filter
- Replace every 6 to 9 months (~$40/yr)
| Route | Up front (Oct 5, 2026) | Yearly consumables | 10 years, before labor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Culligan WH-HD200-C + RFC-BBSA carbon | $73.55 | $240 to $330 (8 to 11 cartridges) | About $2,470 to $3,370 |
| Culligan WH-S200-C + SCWH-5 carbon paper | $45.99 | $60 to $80, capped at 4 GPM | About $650 to $850 |
| SpringWell CF1 tank | $1,160.25 | About $40 in pre-filters | About $1,560 |
That middle row is the honest exception. If your only complaint is a faint chlorine taste and your household rarely draws much water at once, a $45.99 housing with carbon-paper cartridges is the cheapest fix on the page. It just isn't certified for anything, and 4 GPM is less than half the CF1's rating. The CF1 carries components certified to NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 and a written chlorine and chloramine guarantee, all set out in our CF series review with the lab results.
Three other systems win narrower cases, all re-read on Oct 5, 2026:
- Chloramine city. The US Water Systems BodyGuard Plus at $1,330.95 (against a $2,218.25 strikethrough) is a backwashing tank built for chloramine, and like Culligan's own tanks it needs a drain.
- A brand off a retail shelf. The Aquasana Rhino read $999 under a banner against a $1,998 list, and suits homes up to 2.5 bathrooms; its trade-offs are in our Aquasana Rhino breakdown.
- Cartridges anyway. The iSpring WGB32B at $516.99 runs three 20-inch Big Blue stages, a larger version of the cartridge approach Culligan sells, with yearly costs in the cost guide linked above.
All seven systems we rank, with their flaws named, are in our seven-system whole house filter ranking.
And if you already own a Culligan heavy-duty housing, it's still useful. Fitted with a coarse sediment cartridge in front of a tank system, it makes a perfectly good pre-filter, and our guide to choosing a sediment micron rating shows which cartridge to put in it.
Modernize's Culligan add-on ranges were read Aug 31, 2026, and the site blocked our reader on Oct 5. Cartridge lifespans and ten-year totals are our arithmetic on published gallon ratings and EPA's household-use figure, not measurements. We did not bench-test any of these systems.
Culligan whole house filter questions, answered
What cartridge does the Culligan WH-S200-C use?
It ships with a P5, a 5-micron spun polypropylene sediment cartridge rated 8,000 gallons or 2 months. Culligan lists the SCWH-5, CW-MF, S1A, CW-F, P5 and P1 as compatible. For chlorine taste and odor, the SCWH-5 carbon-paper cartridge is the one to choose, at $19.99 for two on culligandiy.com (Oct 5, 2026).
Does a Culligan whole house filter remove chloramine?
Not on anything we've been able to verify. The retail cartridge pages claim chlorine taste and odor, and the only Culligan DIY products listed for chloramine are under-sink units. On the dealer side, an answer in Culligan's product Q&A says its catalytic carbon filters reduce chloramine, but the certification text on the product pages covers chlorine taste and odor only. If your utility uses chloramine, ask for the certification in writing.
Does a Culligan whole house filter soften water?
No. Sediment and carbon cartridges let dissolved calcium and magnesium straight through, and so do Culligan's dealer filter tanks. Culligan sells softeners as a separate product line.
Does Culligan make a whole house reverse osmosis system?
Not in the residential whole-home filtration lineup on culligan.com on Oct 5, 2026. Culligan's filtration page sends drinking-water buyers to its reverse osmosis systems, which treat a kitchen tap. Whole-house reverse osmosis exists as a specialist category with its own costs and trade-offs.
Aquasana or Culligan for a whole house filter?
They are different purchases. The Aquasana Rhino has a published price, $999 under a banner against a $1,998 list on Oct 5, 2026, and you install it or hire a plumber. A Culligan dealer system arrives with a water test, installation and service, at a price you only learn at the visit. The Rhino's trade-offs are a sealed tank and a 2.5-bathroom ceiling; the Culligan's are an unpublished price and a one-year warranty line on the whole system.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a Culligan whole house filtration system cost?
Retail Culligan housings cost $34.99 to $119.99 on culligandiy.com (Oct 5, 2026), plus cartridges. Culligan dealer systems have no published price: Culligan's own FAQ says the price varies with the system and its features, and offers purchase, rental or financing. Modernize put a Culligan carbon filtration add-on at $500 to $2,000 and iron filtration at $1,000 to $2,500 (read Aug 31, 2026).
Is the Culligan whole house water filter good?
The retail housing is a well-built sediment filter with a 2- or 5-year warranty, but the only certification its page cites is structural integrity, and its carbon cartridges claim chlorine taste and odor reduction only. Culligan's dealer systems carry WQA certification to NSF/ANSI 42 or 53 and come with service, at a price you only learn at the visit. For chlorine at every tap, a 1,000,000-gallon tank system costs less over ten years than the heavy-duty retail carbon route, and its price is published.
How often should you change a Culligan whole house water filter?
At its gallon rating or its month limit, whichever comes first, and on a whole house the gallons usually win. By our arithmetic on EPA's figure of more than 300 gallons a day per household, a 10,000-gallon RFC-BBSA carbon cartridge lasts about 5 to 7 weeks and an 8,000-gallon P5 sediment cartridge about 4 to 5 weeks.
Who makes the Culligan filters sold in stores?
Culligan's retail filter line is sold through CulliganDIY.com, which its About page says is run by ZeroWater (Zero Technologies LLC), a company in the Culligan International group. Same corporate family as your local Culligan dealer, different channel: no water test, no installer, and prices you can see.
What are the disadvantages of a whole house water filter?
A recurring media or cartridge cost, a pressure drop if the system is undersized, a drain line for backwashing tanks, and no effect at all on hardness. Cartridge housings add a change every few weeks to months; tank systems trade that chore for a higher price up front.
