The best water softener at Home Depot is the Rheem Preferred Plus RHS42, the step-up model of the only line on this list whose maker publishes a full performance sheet and sells through Home Depot alone. The rest of the shelf splits by household: Aquasure for capacity per dollar, the smaller Rheem RHS32 for one or two bathrooms, PRO+AQUA for big homes and APEC for warranty length. How these machines work, and what the whole market charges, is in our guide to how water softeners work and what they cost.
The short answer
as of Oct 5, 2026What is the best water softener at Home Depot?
The Rheem Preferred Plus RHS42. Rheem rates it at 42,400 grains and 9.9 GPM of service flow at a published 12 psi pressure drop, adds a built-in sediment filter, and sells it only through Home Depot. Its last readable price was $539 after a $50 discount on Aug 28, 2026, because Home Depot blocks automated reads. For more capacity per dollar, the Aquasure Harmony 48,000 read $629.99 on Aquasure's store on Oct 5, 2026.

Key takeaways
- Of the four brands ranked here, only Rheem publishes service flow with its pressure drop: 9.9 GPM at 12 psi on the RHS42.
- Home Depot refused every read on Oct 5, 2026, so both Rheem prices date from Aug 28 and the other three are maker prices.
- Day-one valve coverage is 1 year on Rheem and Aquasure, 5 years on APEC and PRO+AQUA. The 10-year figures cover tanks only.
- A family of four at 15 gpg uses about 31,500 grains a week, more than the 30,000-grain APEC covers on a weekly cycle.
- EcoPure no longer lists Home Depot as a retailer and GE's GXSH40V is out of production, so neither is ranked.
What Is the Best Water Softener at Home Depot?#
The Rheem RHS42 for most homes, with four alternatives that each win one situation. We ranked softeners with a Home Depot product listing indexed on Oct 5, 2026, on what their makers publish. We did not bench-test these units.
| Rank | System | Capacity | Price, with date | Day-one warranty | Wins at |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rheem Preferred Plus RHS42 | 42,400 grains | $539 after $50 off at Home Depot (Aug 28, 2026) | 1 yr parts and labor | Best overall |
| 2 | Aquasure Harmony AS-HS48D | 48,000 grains | $629.99 at Aquasure (Oct 5, 2026) | 1 yr, 5 if registered | Capacity per dollar |
| 3 | Rheem Preferred RHS32 | 33,000 rated | $489 at Home Depot (Aug 28, 2026) | 1 yr parts and labor | One or two bathrooms |
| 4 | PRO+AQUA PRO-S-80E | 80,000 grains | $1,149.95 at PRO+AQUA (Oct 5, 2026) | 5 yr, 7 if registered | Big households |
| 5 | APEC Hydro Express 30 | 30,000 grains | $581.99 at APEC (Oct 5, 2026) | 5 yr limited | Warranty at entry size |
1. Best Overall: Rheem Preferred Plus RHS42#
Of the makers ranked here, only Rheem publishes the numbers a plumber would ask for, and the RHS42 has the best of them. Its product page, read Oct 5, 2026, adds a built-in sediment filter with no cartridge to change, an external blending valve that sets how soft the water comes out, and the line "Buy Exclusively At The Home Depot". The weak point is our price data: $539 after a $50 discount on Aug 28, 2026, a base price we never confirmed, and no price at all on Rheem's site.
| Rheem spec, read Oct 5, 2026 | RHS32 (Preferred) | RHS42 (Preferred Plus) |
|---|---|---|
| Rated capacity | 33,000 grains at 14.1 lb of salt | 42,400 grains at 16.3 lb |
| Service flow, pressure drop | 7.9 GPM, 14.9 psi | 9.9 GPM, 12.0 psi |
| Maximum hardness | 105 gpg | 140 gpg |
| Maximum clear-water iron | 8 ppm | 11 ppm |
| Height | 43.5 in | 48 in |
| Last price read at Home Depot | $489 (Aug 28, 2026) | $539 after $50 off (Aug 28, 2026) |
What we like
- 9.9 GPM rated service flow, with the pressure drop published
- Rated for 11 ppm of clear-water iron, the highest published figure here
- Built-in sediment filter and external blending valve
What to watch
- 1 year of parts and labor; 5 years only with Rheem cleaner every four months
- Brand-specific control valve, serviced through Rheem and Home Depot
- No readable price since our Aug 28, 2026 reading
2. Best Capacity for the Money: Aquasure Harmony 48,000#
The Harmony AS-HS48D is the most softener per dollar on the shelf: $629.99 on Aquasure's store on Oct 5, 2026, for 48,000 grains with a 160 lb brine tank and a metered head. Register it within 60 days and the 1-year coverage on electronics and valves becomes 5 years, with nothing to buy; the tanks get 10.
Aquasure
Aquasure Harmony Series AS-HS48D Water Softener (48,000 Grain)
Best for: Households that want 48,000 grains for under $650 and a warranty that extends by registration alone
- Grain capacity
- 48,000
- Flow rate
- 15 GPM maximum (no pressure drop published)
- Max hardness
- 110 gpg
- Iron reduction
- Up to 2 ppm (10 ppm on the Fine Mesh AS-HS48FM)
- Brine tank
- 160 lb salt
- Retail
- Aquasure store and Home Depot (model AS-HS48D)
The catches sit in what the spec sheet leaves out. Aquasure gives a 15 GPM maximum flow with no pressure drop, which can't be compared with Rheem's rated figure. The standard resin handles 2 ppm of iron (10 ppm on the Fine Mesh AS-HS48FM), and no NSF or WQA system certification is named. The warranty never covers labor, and the page quotes two different household sizes for the same model, so size it with the formula below.
3. Best for One or Two Bathrooms: Rheem Preferred RHS32#
For a small home, the smaller Rheem does the job for less: $489 at Home Depot on Aug 28, 2026, with a $439 promotion logged three days later. Rheem rates it at 33,000 grains and 7.9 GPM, and markets it for households of up to 4 people.
Rheem
Rheem Preferred RHS32 Water Softener (32,000 Grain)
Best for: The budget tier-1 pick for tight budgets and handy owners, now that the GE GXSH40V is discontinued
- Grain capacity
- 32,000
- Flow rate
- 7.9 GPM
- Reduces
- Hardness and iron
- Retail
- Buy Exclusively At The Home Depot, not sold on Amazon
Respect the 7.9 GPM. In a bigger house, showers and appliances running at once can outrun it. Our full Rheem RHS32 and RHS42 review covers the whole Preferred line.
4. Best for Big Households: PRO+AQUA PRO-S-80E#
Large families on very hard water are where the 80,000-grain PRO+AQUA earns its price: $1,149.95 on the brand's store on Oct 5, 2026, against a $1,300 compare-at figure. It pairs a 25 GPM maximum flow with a 200 lb brine tank, and the warranty runs 5 years standard, 7 with registration.
PRO+AQUA
PRO+AQUA PRO-S-80E Heavy Duty Water Softener (80,000 Grain)
Best for: Large households on very hard water, where a 30,000 to 48,000-grain unit would regenerate several times a week
- Grain capacity
- 80,000
- Flow rate
- 25 GPM maximum
- Brine tank
- 200 lb salt
- Resin
- NSF-certified resin (the resin, not the system)
- Tank
- 13 x 13 x 64 in, 130 lb
- Retail
- PRO+AQUA store and Home Depot (model PRO-S-80E)
It also stands apart on parts. PRO+AQUA sells its 80,000-grain digital softener valve on its own ($299 on Oct 5, 2026), so a dead head is a part rather than a new softener. Two cautions: the NSF certification it advertises covers the resin rather than the system, and a 64-inch tank is oversized for most homes of four or fewer.
5. Longest Day-One Warranty: APEC Hydro Express 30#
APEC's Hydro Express 30 carries a 5-year limited warranty on a $581.99 softener (APEC store, Oct 5, 2026), the longest unconditional term at the entry price. It's metered, and APEC's own sizing table moves three or more people above 10 gpg to the bigger HE-45.
APEC Water Systems
APEC Hydro Express Water Softener 30 (SOFTENER-HE-30-FG)
Best for: Small households on moderate hardness that want five years of coverage at an entry price
- Grain capacity
- 30,000
- Flow rate
- 17.6 GPM peak
- Resin
- 1.0 cu ft standard resin
- Tank
- 9 x 48 in (55 in with head)
- Brine tank
- 13.4 x 13.4 x 31.9 in
- Retail
- APEC store and Home Depot (model SOFTENER-HE-30-FG)
The trade is capacity and evidence. At 30,000 grains it is the smallest unit here, its 17.6 GPM is a peak figure, and the page gives no iron rating. One buyer review on APEC's page, a single account and not a test, describes parts that neither Home Depot nor Ace could supply because they are proprietary.
Are Home Depot Water Softeners Any Good?#
Yes, as machines. Every unit ranked here is a metered ion-exchange softener, the technology that actually lowers a hardness test result. Where they trail factory-direct systems is the warranty and the valve, and both can be checked before you buy.
Read the warranty part by part. On the Rheem and Aquasure terms, the 10-year figure attaches to the tanks, which have no moving parts, while the valve and electronics get the short ones, and the middle years only exist if you register in time or keep buying the brand's cleaner.
Warranty, read part by part
as of Oct 5, 2026- Covered from the day you buyValve, control head and parts, on the terms the warranty grants at purchase.
- Covered only if you meet a conditionRegister before a deadline, or buy and use the brand's cleaner. Miss it and coverage stops where the solid bar ends.
- TanksResin tank and brine tank, where the maker publishes a separate term. Long numbers live here.
- Rheem Preferred (RHS32, RHS42)conditionalParts and labor for 1 year, stretched to 5 only if you dose Rheem's own cleaner every four months. Electronics 3 years, tanks 10.
- Aquasure Harmony AS-HS48DconditionalElectronics, valves and resin for 1 year, 5 in total if registered within 60 days. Resin and brine tanks 10 years. Labor and freight are never covered.
- PRO+AQUA PRO-S-80EconditionalFive-year standard warranty, seven with registration. No separate tank term published.
- APEC Hydro Express 30Five-year limited warranty, as stated on the product page. No separate tank term published.
- SpringWell SS1 (direct, not at Home Depot)lifetimeLifetime on tanks, valves and fittings. The electronic head is the exception, at 5 years.
Terms as published on each manufacturer's product or warranty page, read Oct 5, 2026. A bar shows how long a term runs, not what a claim pays: labor, shipping and exclusions differ, and the numbered notes give each one in the warranty's own words.
Then look at the valve. Rheem's control head is brand-specific, so a failure outside warranty sends you back to Rheem and Home Depot. PRO+AQUA stands apart because it sells its valve separately.

What Size Water Softener Should You Buy at Home Depot?#
Size by grains per week, not by the bathroom count on the box. Multiply people by 75 gallons a day, by your hardness in grains per gallon, by 7 days, then pick the unit whose usable capacity, about 75 percent of its rating, covers that week.
A family of four at 15 gpg uses 4 x 75 x 15 x 7 = 31,500 grains a week. The RHS42 leaves about 31,800 usable grains, just enough. The APEC leaves 22,500, so it would regenerate more than once a week.
Sizing, by the week
- The size to buyThe smallest tank whose usable capacity still covers a full week, so the unit recharges about weekly. That is the rhythm resin is happiest at.
- Too smallUsable capacity lands under your weekly load, so the valve regenerates every few days: more salt, more waste water, more wear on the head.
- More than you needIt will work, but you paid for resin that never gets used, and a bed that sits idle for a fortnight can channel and lose efficiency anyway.
- The 25 percent held in reserveThe dark tail on every bar is rated capacity left deliberately unused. Running resin down to its last grain costs far more salt per grain removed, so the industry sizes to about 75 percent.
4 people x 75 gallons a day x 15 gpg x 7 days = 31,500 grains a week, against usable capacity capped at 75 percent of each maker's published rating, read Oct 5, 2026.

What About GE, EcoPure and Whirlpool?#
None of the three makes this list. The GE GXSH40V is out of production: GE's own store listed it on Oct 5, 2026 at $569 on clearance against a $649 list, under the line "This model is no longer being manufactured". Buy one only after confirming warranty support.
EcoPure still has a brand page in Home Depot's search results, but on Oct 5, 2026 the Where to Buy block on all seven of its US softener pages named retailers such as Amazon and Ace Hardware, and never Home Depot. Whirlpool's own WHES44 page sends its Buy Now button to Lowe's, where AO Smith sells too; see our review of the Whirlpool WHES line at Lowe's and our look at AO Smith's Lowe's-only softeners. The iSpring WCS45KG, $1,558.99 on iSpring's store (Oct 5, 2026) for 45,000 grains and a 1-year warranty, doesn't make the cut.

Which Salt Should You Buy at Home Depot?#
Evaporated salt pellets or solar salt crystals with less than 1 percent impurities, and never block salt. That is Rheem's written instruction on both Preferred pages, and EcoPure prints the same rule.
Home Depot's salt prices could not be read on Oct 5, 2026. As a reference, a 40 lb bag ran $5 to $10 in Angi's 2026 data, and a year of salt costs $50 to $150 in HomeGuide's 2026 guide. Our page on pellets, crystals and block salt compared covers how much a household goes through.
How Much Does Home Depot Charge to Install a Water Softener?#
We can't tell you: Home Depot's water treatment installation page returned Access Denied on Oct 5, 2026. Plumbers charge $300 to $1,500 for a softener install in the Angi, HomeGuide and Fixr 2026 guides, depending on how much new plumbing the spot needs.
Doing it yourself is realistic when a drain and an outlet sit near the main line. Our guide to the install, start to first soft water walks through it, and what a plumber charges to fit one breaks a quote down.
What the Home Depot Aisle Doesn't Sell#
Open, rebuildable valves and long coverage on the parts that move. The SpringWell SS1 read $1,606.50 on Oct 5, 2026, with a lifetime warranty on tanks, valves and fittings and 5 years on the electronic head. The US Water Systems Matrixx read $1,466.95 the same day, built on an open-standard valve that any qualified technician can rebuild.
That is roughly $930 to $1,070 more than the RHS42's last readable price from Aug 28. Whether it pays back depends on how long you stay; our SpringWell SS1 teardown runs that math, and our ranking of all ten systems we track compares this aisle with direct and dealer systems. Warehouse-club shoppers can check what Costco sells instead.
Which One Should You Buy?#
Home Depot refused every automated read on Oct 5, 2026, so its prices come from the last readings that worked. Installation and salt ranges are the 2026 cost guides named in the text.
Home Depot softener questions people actually search
Does Home Depot sell Whirlpool water softeners?
Not as a current line. An old Home Depot listing for the Whirlpool WHES30 still appears in search results, but Whirlpool's own WHES44 page sent its Buy Now button to Lowe's on Oct 5, 2026. Plan on a Lowe's purchase.
Does Home Depot sell salt-free water softeners?
It lists salt-free systems such as the Kind E-3000, $2,094.10 on Kind's store as of Sep 12, 2026. These condition hardness so it forms less scale, and a hardness test reads the same afterward. For soft water, buy a salt-based unit.
Which water softener cleaner should I buy?
For a Rheem, Rheem's own cleaner, because the 5-year parts and labor extension depends on using it every four months. EcoPure ties its 5-year extension to its EPCL cleaner the same way. On other brands, read the warranty text before you pick a generic resin cleaner.
Is a Home Depot water softener good for well water?
Only if the iron is light. Rheem rates the RHS42 to 11 ppm and the RHS32 to 8 ppm of clear-water iron, while Aquasure's standard resin is rated to 2 ppm. Heavier iron or sulfur calls for a dedicated filter ahead of any softener.
On a well with more than trace iron, start with our softeners picked for iron and well water.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best water softener at Home Depot?
The Rheem Preferred Plus RHS42, rated by Rheem at 42,400 grains and 9.9 GPM of service flow, with 140 gpg and 11 ppm iron ceilings. Rheem sells it only through Home Depot, where our last readable price was $539 after a $50 discount on Aug 28, 2026. For more capacity per dollar, the 48,000-grain Aquasure Harmony read $629.99 on Aquasure's store on Oct 5, 2026.
Are Home Depot water softeners any good?
As machines, yes. Every unit we rank is a metered ion-exchange softener that removes hardness. The weak points are the warranty and the parts: Rheem and Aquasure start at 1 year on the valve and parts, the longer terms are conditional or limited to the tanks, and Rheem's control valve is brand-specific.
How much does Home Depot charge to install a water softener?
Home Depot's installation page refused our reads on Oct 5, 2026, so we cannot quote its price. Plumbers charge $300 to $1,500 for a softener install in the Angi, HomeGuide and Fixr 2026 guides, depending on how much new plumbing the spot needs.
Does Home Depot still sell the GE water softener?
The GE GXSH40V is out of production. GE's own store listed it on Oct 5, 2026 at $569 on clearance, against a $649 list price, with the note that it is no longer being manufactured. Buy remaining stock only after checking warranty support.
What salt should I use in a Home Depot water softener?
Evaporated salt pellets or solar salt crystals with less than 1 percent impurities, and never block salt. That is Rheem's written instruction for its Preferred softeners, and EcoPure gives the same one. A 40 lb bag ran $5 to $10 in Angi's 2026 cost data.
