Costco Water Softener Guide 2026: What They Actually Sell (EcoWater & More)

Costco sells water softeners through EcoWater dealers, not off a shelf: a home visit, a dealer quote and a 10% Shop Card. What it buys, and the math against it.

Costco's water softener is an EcoWater system that a local dealer quotes and installs after a free home visit, with a 10% Costco Shop Card on qualifying whole-home bundles. No costco.com page we could read on Oct 5, 2026 sold a boxed softener or priced the program, so check the dealer's quote against our guide to home water softeners.

The short answer

as of Oct 5, 2026

What water softener does Costco sell?

EcoWater Systems, through an installed program rather than a box on a shelf. A member books a free in-home consultation, and a local EcoWater dealer tests the water, quotes the system and installs it. After sign-off, qualifying whole-home bundles earn a 10% Costco Shop Card. Neither Costco nor EcoWater publishes a price, so your cost is the dealer's quote.

Key takeaways

  • EcoWater was the only water treatment brand on Costco's US installed-products page on Oct 5, 2026. Kinetico runs through Costco in Canada only.
  • The reward is a 10% Shop Card on qualifying whole-home bundles, based on the pretax installed price.
  • With no published price, a qualifying $5,000 quote would return a $500 card, which is store credit on top of the bill.
  • HomeGuide puts an installed salt softener at $1,200 to $3,800 (read Oct 5, 2026); the factory-direct Matrixx read $1,466.95 the same day, before installation.

Does Costco Sell Water Softeners?#

Yes, as an installed service. Costco's Home and Installation Services page lists EcoWater Systems as its water treatment brand, beside Lennox for HVAC, and that program was the only softener offer we found on costco.com on Oct 5, 2026.

The filtration category mentions "smart water softening systems," but its product grid loads by script and Costco's search refused our requests. The units we could open were drinking water systems: the Pure Blue 1:1 reverse osmosis unit at $189.99 and the Brondell Circle at $369.99, both shown out of stock on Oct 5, 2026.

That splits the decision. If taste is the problem, an under-sink unit may be enough, and our buyer's guide to reverse osmosis explains what those systems remove. If scale is the problem, Costco's answer is a dealer visit.

How Does the Costco EcoWater Program Work?#

Costco handles the first step and the last one. In its own words, "An EcoWater dealer will fulfill your order and complete your installation," so the dealer is the company you actually buy from.

The Costco EcoWater process, per costco.com

  1. Book the free consultation

Use the Get Started form on Costco's EcoWater page or call the number listed there. Costco's FAQ says there is no obligation to buy.
  2. Water test at your home

An EcoWater consultant tests your water on site. Have your own hardness reading ready so their number meets yours.
  3. Recommendation and quote

Model, grain capacity, warranty and price all appear at this step. Ask for each one in writing.
  4. Installation, then the card

A local EcoWater dealer installs the system, usually in one day per Costco's FAQ. The digital Shop Card can take up to 7 days after Costco receives your signed completion paperwork.

Who does what

How a retailer-referral installed water treatment program worksTwo-lane flow chart. The upper lane is the retailer, the lower lane is the local dealer. Step 1, the member's request, sits in the retailer lane. An arrow drops to step 2, the in-home water test, in the dealer lane, then runs right to step 3, the quote, contract and installation, where the price is set. A final arrow rises back to step 4 in the retailer lane, the reward card issued after the job is complete. Between steps 1 and 4 the retailer lane is only a dashed line, because the retailer publishes no price.COSTCOECOWATER DEALERNO PRICE ON THE PAGEPRICE SET HERE1234REQUESTWATER TESTQUOTE + INSTALLSHOP CARD10% OF PRETAX
  1. RequestYou ask for a consultation on the retailer's page or by phone. Until the job is finished, that is the retailer's whole role.
  2. In-home water testA consultant working for the dealer tests the water at your house and recommends a system. It is useful sizing work, and it is also the sales visit.
  3. Quote, contract and installationprice set hereThe dealer prices the system, writes the contract, installs it and services it afterward. The model, the grain capacity and the warranty terms live on this paperwork, not on the retailer's page.
  4. Reward cardafter sign-offOnce the installation is complete and the paperwork is signed, the retailer issues a card worth a share of the price. It is credit for future shopping, not a discount on the system itself.

Schematic of a retailer-referral installed program, not of any contract. The roles follow the retailer's own program page; the exact share, the purchases that qualify and the timing are set by its terms and by the dealer's paperwork.

Costco owns the request and the reward. Everything that sets the price sits with the local dealer, which is why no number exists until the visit.

Costco's page names no models and prints no prices. Its warranty answer says terms vary by product and region, with the consultant providing details, so the step-three paperwork is the only record of what you bought. Before the visit, check your area in our state-by-state water hardness map and work out the grain capacity your house needs.

How Much Does a Water Softener System Cost From Costco?#

Nobody publishes it. Neither costco.com nor ecowater.com printed a softener price on Oct 5, 2026, so a Costco water softener costs whatever your dealer quotes after the visit, installation included. These are the reference points we would hold that quote against.

The $5,000 to $10,000 band comes from other dealer brands. No neutral source we read printed an EcoWater range, and a single forum bid isn't a price, so none appears here.

Watch the condition in the headline. The card applies to "Qualifying Water Treatment Whole Home Bundle Purchases," a bundle the page never defines, so have the consultant write on the quote whether yours qualifies. To price the plumbing by itself, see what installation alone costs.

What EcoWater Systems Can You Get Through Costco?#

Costco's page names product families rather than models: softeners and refiners, reverse osmosis systems it calls "certified to remove 92 known contaminants," an optional alkaline filter and HydroLink Plus Wi-Fi monitoring. The consultant picks the model.

EcoWater's own catalog listed eleven softener and refiner series on Oct 5, 2026, without prices. A refiner adds a filtering media to the softener tank. EcoWater says its refiners are built for municipal water and reduce hardness and chlorine, and its ERR3700 sheet pairs the resin with coconut-shell carbon.

EcoWater ECR3700 spec sheet 0602926, Rev. F (11/18), downloaded from ecowater.com on Oct 5, 2026. Other parts carry 5 years. Costco does not name the models its dealers install, so this shows the brand's published numbers rather than the system you will be quoted.

Those are solid numbers. The 5,030 grains per pound clears the 3,350-grain floor that the Department of Energy's Building America Solution Center cites for an NSF/ANSI 44 efficiency rating (read Sep 28, 2026). EcoWater was founded in 1925, sells through more than 250 authorized dealers and belongs to Berkshire Hathaway's Marmon Group.

Are Costco Water Softeners Good?#

The machine is rarely the problem. EcoWater builds conventional ion exchange softeners with published specs. The doubts sit in the channel, where the price stays hidden until a salesperson visits and service runs through one local dealer.

What we like

  • A free in-home water test with no obligation to buy, per Costco's FAQ
  • Dealer installation, usually completed in one day
  • Lifetime tank coverage for the original owner on the spec sheets we read
  • A 10% Shop Card on qualifying bundles, plus an extended warranty Costco says members receive

What to watch

  • No price until the sales visit, so you can't compare before inviting one
  • The card is store credit based on the pretax installed price
  • Costco's FAQ sends maintenance questions to your local EcoWater dealer
  • Costco gives no length for its extended warranty, and EcoWater says some terms apply only to the original owner

What you hear

Buying through Costco means Costco's return policy covers the softener.

What the numbers say

Costco's EcoWater page states no return terms. On its bath remodeling and windows programs, Costco says special order, custom and installed merchandise cannot be returned after the right-to-cancel period, an exception to its standard policy. Costco.ca says the same of custom water treatment products, apart from warranty repair.

If that sounds like the Culligan model with a membership card attached, it is the same channel. Our Culligan softener review shows how such a quote is built, and our line-by-line guide to dealer quotes takes one apart.

Can You Get a Kinetico Water Softener at Costco?#

In Canada, yes. In the US, no Costco page we could read mentions it: the installed-products page listed EcoWater alone on Oct 5, 2026.

Costco.ca offers up to $1,000 Canadian on a Shop Card with a Kinetico system, on product and basic installation, plus a free consultation within 40 km of a warehouse a Kinetico dealer serves (read Oct 5, 2026). US buyers go to a dealer directly, since Kinetico's FAQ says it doesn't sell directly to the public (read Sep 28, 2026). Our Kinetico price breakdown decodes that quote, and the full Kinetico review covers the twin-tank hardware.

Does Costco Sell Water Softener Salt?#

Yes, though every listing we reached on Oct 5, 2026 hid its price behind a sign-in. Costco Business Delivery lists Diamond Crystal pellets in a 40 lb bag (item 12722), shown out of stock that day, and Costco's Same-Day site has pages for 50 lb bags from Diamond Crystal, Culligan and Morton.

Warehouse stock varies, so check yours first. Angi's 2026 figures put pellets at $5 to $10 per 40 lb bag, and HomeGuide's put a year of salt at $50 to $150 (both read Aug 2026). EcoWater says most newer high-efficiency softeners use fewer than 10 bags a year. We couldn't confirm a Costco listing for potassium chloride. Our guide to which salt form to buy and how much you'll use covers the rest.

What Are the Best Alternatives to a Costco Water Softener?#

Two routes give you a price before anyone visits: a boxed softener off a big-box shelf, or a factory-direct system your own plumber installs.

The cheapest entry is the big-box aisle, such as a Rheem RHS32 last read at $489 on Aug 28, 2026, with a 1-year warranty. Our Home Depot softener picks rank that shelf, and the AO Smith review covers the Lowe's line. A step up, these two factory-direct systems were read at the source on Oct 5, 2026.

Costco water softener questions people search

How does the Costco Shop Card work on a water softener?

Costco offers a Shop Card worth 10% on qualifying water treatment whole-home bundles bought through its EcoWater program. The amount is based on the pretax installed price, some items such as preparation work are excluded, and the digital card arrives up to 7 days after Costco receives your signed completion paperwork. It can't be redeemed for cash.

Can you return a water softener bought through Costco?

Plan as if you can't, unless the contract says otherwise. Costco's EcoWater page states no return terms, while its other installed programs exclude installed merchandise from the standard return policy once the right-to-cancel period ends. Read the dealer contract's cancellation clause before signing.

Does Costco install water softeners?

Costco arranges it, and a local EcoWater dealer does the work. Costco's FAQ says most installations take a single day, and the installation is bundled into the dealer's quote rather than priced separately.

What is the difference between an EcoWater softener and a refiner?

A softener removes the calcium and magnesium that make water hard. A refiner adds a filtering media to the same tank: EcoWater describes its refiners as built for municipal water to reduce hardness and chlorine, and its ERR3700 sheet lists coconut-shell carbon alongside the resin.

Can you monitor a Costco EcoWater softener from your phone?

On many models, yes. Costco's page says HydroLink Plus Wi-Fi lets you track water use and get low-salt alerts in a mobile app. Ask whether the system you are quoted includes it, since the page says many systems, not all.

Frequently asked questions

Does Costco sell water softeners?

In the US, Costco sells water softeners through an installed program with EcoWater Systems rather than as a boxed unit. A local EcoWater dealer tests the water at a free home visit, then quotes and installs the system, and Costco issues a Shop Card afterward. None of the costco.com pages we could read on Oct 5, 2026 listed a softener for sale online.

How much does a water softener system cost from Costco?

Costco and EcoWater publish no price, so the cost is whatever the local dealer quotes after the home visit. For calibration, HomeGuide puts an installed salt-based softener at $1,200 to $3,800 nationally, average $2,500 (read Oct 5, 2026). Qualifying whole-home bundles also earn a Shop Card worth 10% of the pretax installed price.

Are Costco water softeners good?

The hardware is mainstream ion exchange from EcoWater, founded in 1925, and its published spec sheets show lifetime tank coverage for the original owner. The weak points are in the channel: no price before a sales visit, and service that runs through one local dealer.

Does Costco sell Kinetico water softeners?

Only in Canada. Costco.ca runs a Kinetico program with up to $1,000 Canadian on a Costco Shop Card (read Oct 5, 2026). Costco's US installed-products page lists EcoWater Systems as its only water treatment brand.

Does Costco sell 50 lb bags of water softener salt?

Costco's Same-Day delivery site has product pages for 50 lb bags from Diamond Crystal, Culligan and Morton, and Costco Business Delivery lists a 40 lb bag of Diamond Crystal pellets. Prices sat behind a sign-in when we checked on Oct 5, 2026, and warehouse stock varies by location.
