Hard water stains come off shower glass with a mild acid and patience: a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water, sprayed on, left to work, then rinsed and dried. That is the solution a shower door maker gives for its own glass. What scratches a door is the shortcut, a razor blade or a scouring pad, and what keeps the film away is a squeegee. If the spots come back within days, the cause is your water, which is the wider story of what hard water does to a home.

The short answer

How do you remove hard water stains from glass shower doors?

Spray the glass with 50/50 white vinegar and water, the mix VIGO gives for hard water on its doors, let it work, wipe with a soft, non-scratch sponge, then rinse and dry. Repeat for thick film rather than scrubbing harder. Keep acids off the metal frame, never mix vinegar with bleach, and skip metal blades: Cardinal Glass says they scratch glass, particularly tempered glass. A haze that survives all of this is etching, which is permanent.

Key takeaways

  • 50/50 water and white vinegar is a door maker's own method: VIGO prints it for hard water and soap scum on glass.
  • Cardinal Glass says metal blades should never touch glass, and its warranties exclude scratching.
  • DreamLine warns hard water left to dry can etch glass, and etching is permanent.
  • VIGO's warranty excludes damage from hard water, so prevention is the owner's job.
  • Above 120 mg/L the USGS calls water hard, and at that level the film returns until the water changes.

What Removes Hard Water Stains from Glass Shower Doors?#

An acid, because the white film is calcium and magnesium left behind when water dries. White vinegar diluted half and half with water is the gentle acid shower door makers name, and it dissolves fresh spots in minutes and thick film in several rounds.

The USGS describes the same residue on dishes as "spots or film" and calls it "not dangerous, but unsightly." On a shower door it mixes with soap scum, the waxy product of soap meeting calcium, which is why the film often feels greasy before it feels gritty. Our broader guide to removing hard water stains from faucets, toilets, grout and stone covers every other surface in the bathroom; this page is only about the glass.

From Kohler, Sterling, VIGO and DreamLine shower door care guides, Whirlpool's vinegar soak test and Cardinal Glass technical bulletins IG12 and FG02, read Oct 12 and Oct 19, 2026. The drawing is schematic: spot sizes are not to scale.

Spots and film are deposits sitting on the glass, so an acid lifts them. Etching is the glass itself, and nothing that cleans glass will bring it back.

Commercial lime removers are the strong end of the shelf. CLR's label limits contact to 2 minutes and lists chrome, fiberglass, porcelain and stainless steel as suitable surfaces; the page we read does not list glass, and it rules out many metal finishes. On a framed door that matters, because the frame is where a strong acid does its damage.

How to Clean Glass Shower Doors with Hard Water Stains, Step by Step#

Work wet to dry, one panel at a time, and let the acid do what scrubbing cannot. The whole method below uses a spray bottle, a soft sponge, a squeegee and a towel.

The soft method for stained shower glass

  1. Rinse the glass

Warm water first takes off loose soap and grit, the particles that turn any sponge into sandpaper.
  2. Spray 50/50 vinegar and water

Equal parts white vinegar and water, the mix VIGO gives for hard water and soap scum. Spray the glass only, not the hinges, handle or frame.
  3. Let it work

VIGO says to let it work without giving a time. Keep the glass wet: on a vertical panel, a paper towel soaked in the mix and pressed onto the worst patch holds the acid in place.
  4. Wipe with a non-scratch sponge

Circles with light pressure. If the film is still there, spray again and wait again rather than pressing harder.
  5. Rinse thoroughly, then dry

Clear water to stop the acid, then a squeegee and a dry microfiber towel. Water left to dry is how the next layer starts.

Why Didn't Vinegar Work on My Shower Glass?#

Usually because it dried before it dissolved anything, or because the haze is not a deposit at all. Thick film needs the acid held wet against it for several rounds; a spray that runs off a vertical door in a minute barely touches it.

Test which one you have. Whirlpool's dishwasher manual gives a simple check for cloudy glassware: soak it in white vinegar for 5 minutes, and if the haze lifts it was hard water, if it stays it is etching. The same logic applies to a shower panel. Hold a vinegar-soaked towel on one patch, rinse, and dry it completely. A patch that comes out clear means more rounds will work. A patch that stays milky, or feels rough under a fingernail once dry, means the glass surface itself has been attacked.

What you hear

If vinegar doesn't work, the stain just needs something stronger and more scrubbing.

What the numbers say

DreamLine's manuals warn that hard water left to dry can etch the glass. Etching is pitting in the glass itself, so no cleaner removes it, and scrubbing a pitted surface with an abrasive only adds scratches to the damage.

Can You Use a Razor Blade on a Shower Door?#

No, and this is the most common way a stained door becomes a scratched one. Cardinal Glass Industries, a US glass manufacturer, says plainly that metal blades should never be used to remove materials from glass, and that its warranties do not cover glass scratching.

Its bulletin on heat-treated glass explains the mechanism. Tempering moves hot glass over rollers, and tiny particles, invisible to the eye, end up fused into the surface. A blade drags those particles across the panel and leaves fine scratches, which Cardinal says happens particularly on tempered glass. Shower doors and enclosures fall under the federal safety glazing standard (16 CFR 1201), and tempered glass is one of the materials that standard defines. Short videos of blades shaving a shower door clean are showing the first pass, not the panel a year later.

Safe on shower glass

  • 50/50 white vinegar and water
  • Non-scratch sponge or soft cloth
  • Squeegee after every shower
  • Mild soap for weekly cleaning

Rule out

  • Metal razor blades and scrapers
  • Steel wool and scouring pads
  • Acid cleaners on the frame and hinges
  • Any acid mixed with bleach

Bottom line

Everything on the right appears in VIGO's warranty exclusions, DreamLine's manuals or Cardinal's bulletins.

The same goes for scouring pads and steel wool. VIGO's warranty says abrasive cleaners, steel wools and harsh chemicals will scratch, damage or dull the product and void the warranty. If your door has a factory protective coating, its own care sheet comes before anything on this page: several makers sell coated glass, and coatings have their own list of what not to use.

How to Prevent Hard Water Stains on Shower Glass#

Squeegee the glass after every shower. Kohler, Sterling and DreamLine all put that line in their care guides, and it is the cheapest habit in the bathroom, because a drop wiped off never dries into a spot.

There is a reason to take prevention seriously beyond the look. VIGO's warranty excludes damage from hard water and improper maintenance, which leaves an etched panel as the owner's problem. A shower filter does not help here: the products sold for showers reduce chlorine, and calcium and magnesium pass straight through, as our comparison of shower filters for hard water explains filter by filter.

Why Do Hard Water Stains Keep Coming Back on Shower Glass?#

Because every shower lays down a fresh dose of minerals. The USGS classes water above 120 mg/L as hard and above 180 mg/L as very hard, and at those levels a clean door films over again within days of skipping the squeegee.

The only fix that stops new film is removing the minerals upstream, which is what an ion-exchange softener does. Six hard water fixes ranked from cheapest to a full softener lays out the cheaper steps first, and how ion-exchange softeners work and who needs one explains the machine.

Shower glass questions people ask

How do you get hard water stains off glass shower doors without scratching them?

Use a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water with a non-scratch sponge, let it work, then rinse and dry. Repeat rather than press harder. Skip razor blades, steel wool and scouring pads: Cardinal Glass says metal blades scratch glass, and VIGO's warranty says abrasives scratch and dull its doors.

What is the best way to remove hard water stains from shower glass?

Hold the acid against the film long enough to dissolve it. A paper towel soaked in 50/50 vinegar and water, pressed onto the worst patch, keeps a vertical panel wet. Then wipe, rinse and squeegee dry.

Does WD-40 remove water spots on glass?

We found no shower door maker that recommends it, and a lubricant left on glass in a wet room is one more film to clean. Stick with the makers' own methods: vinegar and water for hard water, mild soap for routine cleaning.

How do you get rid of calcium buildup on glass?

Dissolve it with a mild acid such as 50/50 white vinegar and water, in several rounds for thick buildup. If the cloudiness survives repeated soaks and feels rough when dry, it is likely etching, which no cleaner reverses.

Frequently asked questions

What removes hard water stains from glass shower doors?

A mild acid, because the stain is calcium and magnesium that acids dissolve. VIGO, a shower door maker, gives a 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar for hard water and soap scum on its glass: spray it on, let it work, then rinse thoroughly and dry. Keep the mix off the metal frame and hinges, which door makers say should not see acids.

Can hard water stains on glass be permanent?

Yes. DreamLine's door manuals warn that hard water left to dry can etch the surface of the glass over time. Etching is damage to the glass itself, not a deposit on top of it, so no cleaner removes it. If a haze survives a long vinegar soak and a rinse, assume it is etching.

Can you use a razor blade on a glass shower door?

We would not. Cardinal Glass Industries, a US glass manufacturer, says metal blades should never be used on glass and that its warranties do not cover scratching. Its bulletin on heat-treated glass explains why: tiny particles fused into the surface of tempered glass during manufacturing get dragged by the blade and scratch it. Shower doors are safety glazing under the federal standard, and tempered glass is one of the materials that meets it.

How do you keep hard water stains off shower glass?

Squeegee the glass after every shower, which Kohler, Sterling and DreamLine all recommend, and wipe it weekly with mild soap. That keeps drops from drying into spots. Only softening the water stops the minerals from arriving in the first place.
