The Aquasana Claryum line is a good carbon filter with one standout and one trap. The standout is the Claryum Direct Connect, $124.99 against a $249.99 MSRP on Oct 12, 2026, which filters through the faucet you already own at 1.5 GPM. The trap is assuming the four models share one certification record: they don't, and the difference sits in the data sheets. If you are still deciding between carbon and a membrane, start with our plain-English guide to reverse osmosis.

The short answer

as of Oct 12, 2026

Which Aquasana under sink water filter should you buy?

Buy the Claryum Direct Connect ($124.99, $249.99 MSRP, Oct 12, 2026) if you want filtered water from your existing tap with no drilling: 1.5 GPM, 784 gallons per cartridge, certified by IAPMO to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401. Buy a 3-Stage model if PFAS is your main worry, because its data sheet is certified to 20 ppt against 70 ppt on the Direct Connect. The 3-Stage Max Flow ($199.99, $449.99 MSRP) was out of stock in every finish that day, so the in-stock 3-Stage at $164.99 ($349.99 MSRP) is the practical pick. On Oct 19 the sale banner was down and all three read at MSRP. None of them removes fluoride, nitrate or hardness.

Key takeaways

  • Claryum Direct Connect: $124.99 on Oct 12, 2026 ($249.99 MSRP), 1.5 GPM through your own faucet, 784 gallons or 6 months per cartridge.
  • 3-Stage Max Flow: $199.99 ($449.99 MSRP), 0.72 GPM, 800 gallons, out of stock in all five finishes on Oct 12, 2026.
  • The dedicated-faucet models are certified by WQA with PFOA and PFOS to 20 ppt; the Direct Connect by IAPMO, to 70 ppt.
  • Cartridges run $147.98 to $183.98 a year at Aquasana's one-off prices, two sets a year.
  • No Claryum model reduces fluoride, nitrate or hardness: carbon keeps calcium and magnesium in the water by design.

Is the Aquasana Under Sink Water Filter Worth It?#

Yes, for city water where the complaint is chlorine, chloramine, taste or lead, and if you buy the right model for your sink. The Claryum is carbon filtration with ion exchange and sub-micron filtering, per Aquasana, with no membrane and no drain line, so nothing goes to waste.

What keeps it from five stars is the paperwork around it, not the filter. The cartridge schedule is short, the warranty is one year, and Aquasana's service reputation is poor: 1.5 out of 5 on Trustpilot across 172 reviews when we checked on Oct 12, 2026. We did not bench-test these units. This review rests on Aquasana's own documents. We read its product pages, install manuals and performance data sheets, checked the certifier listings we could open, and did the arithmetic ourselves.

Claryum Direct Connect vs 3-Stage vs 3-Stage Max Flow: Which Model?#

All four use the same Claryum media, Aquasana's FAQ says. What changes is capacity, flow and the faucet. That makes the choice a plumbing question first.

Direct Connect

  • Filters through the tap you already have
  • 1.5 GPM, so filling a pot is normal
  • No hole to drill, the easiest install in the line
  • PFOA and PFOS certified at the older 70 ppt level

3-Stage or Max Flow

  • Adds a small dedicated faucet, 1/2 inch hole
  • 0.5 to 0.72 GPM at that faucet
  • Sediment pre-filter in front of the carbon
  • PFOA and PFOS certified to 20 ppt

The call

Pick the Direct Connect for convenience and flow. Pick a 3-Stage model when PFAS in your utility report is the reason you are buying.

The matte black 2-Stage, sold as the AQ-6200-MB, was $134.99 against a $269.99 MSRP on Oct 12, 2026 and in stock. It is the same 2-Stage in a different finish, so buy it for the look, not the filtration. For the wider field, with membranes in the mix, see our ranking of under-sink filters by budget.

Who Certified the Claryum Filters, and to What?#

WQA certified the three dedicated-faucet models and IAPMO certified the Direct Connect. Both tested against the same NSF/ANSI standards: 42, 53 and 401. That wording matters, because NSF/ANSI names a standard, while NSF International is only one of the bodies that certify to it.

Certified to what, by whom

The 2-Stage, 3-Stage and 3-Stage Max Flow are certified by WQA to 42, 53 and 401 including the 20 ppt PFAS level. The Direct Connect is certified by IAPMO to 42, 53 and 401, with PFAS at the older 70 ppt level. • 2-Stage500 gallonsWQA certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401. Aquasana's page says it meets the stricter NSF/ANSI 53 PFAS requirement tested down to 20 ppt.
  • 3-Stagepre-filterSame certification list as the 2-Stage, plus a 5-micron sediment pre-filter in front of the two Claryum cartridges.
  • 3-Stage Max Flow0.02 ug/LWQA certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401. Its data sheet lists PFOA and PFOS at a 0.02 ug/L maximum with 99.7% reduction, and lead at 99.6% (pH 8.5).

Solid dot: certified. Half dot: certified at a looser level than the column names. Ring with a bar: not certified. Columns, left to right: NSF/ANSI 42 (chlorine, taste, particulates), NSF/ANSI 53 (lead, cysts, VOCs and other health claims), PFOA and PFOS to 20 parts per trillion, NSF/ANSI 401 (trace pharmaceuticals and other emerging compounds), NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis). From Aquasana's product pages, Certified Products page and performance data sheets, read Oct 12, 2026. NSF International's own listing shows no Claryum entry, which is expected: WQA and IAPMO certified these models to NSF/ANSI standards.

Same standards across the line, two certifiers and two PFAS thresholds. The 58 column stays empty for every model because none of them has a membrane.

The PFAS line is the one to read. The AQ-6300M data sheet lists PFOA and PFOS at a maximum of 0.02 micrograms per liter, 20 parts per trillion, with 99.7% reduction. The Direct Connect's sheet lists them at 0.07 micrograms per liter, 70 ppt, with 95.2% reduction. Aquasana's 2-Stage and 3-Stage pages make the same 20 ppt claim as the Max Flow.

What you hear

If a filter is not in NSF International's database, its NSF/ANSI certification is fake.

What the numbers say

NSF International's public listing, current as of Oct 12, 2026, shows no Claryum entry, only two Aquasana UV units under NSF/ANSI 55. That is expected: WQA and IAPMO are accredited certifiers that test to the same NSF/ANSI standards. Check the certifier named on the data sheet, not just NSF's site.

We could not open the WQA and IAPMO directories from here, because both load their results with scripts we cannot read. The certification claims on this page therefore come from Aquasana's pages and data sheets, attributed as such.

Aquasana 3-Stage Max Flow Under Sink Water Filter Review#

The Max Flow is the most capable model in the line on paper, and on Oct 12, 2026 you could not buy it from Aquasana. All five finishes showed out of stock, at $199.99 to $209.99 with a faucet and $189.99 without one.

Its case is capacity and flow. Aquasana rates it at 0.72 GPM, 44% faster than the 3-Stage, and 800 gallons per cartridge set, 33% more. The 5-micron pre-filter in stage one catches rust and silt before they reach the two carbon stages, which is what you want on older pipes.

What we like

  • WQA certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401, with PFOA/PFOS reduced to 20 ppt on its data sheet
  • Sediment pre-filter included, which protects the two carbon stages on gritty water
  • 800 gallons per cartridge set, the largest capacity in the Claryum line
  • Keeps calcium and magnesium in the water and sends nothing to the drain

What to watch

  • Out of stock in all five finishes on aquasana.com on Oct 12, 2026
  • 0.72 GPM through a dedicated faucet, half the flow of the Direct Connect
  • Needs a 1/2 inch hole in the sink or counter for its own faucet
  • Replacement set $91.99 every 6 months at the one-off price (Oct 12, 2026)

At 0.72 GPM it is still a drinking-water tap, not a second kitchen faucet. The unit is 12.85 inches tall, so measure the cabinet height under the sink before ordering.

If the Max Flow is still out of stock when you read this, the 3-Stage is the same design at lower flow.

Aquasana Claryum Direct Connect Review#

The Direct Connect is the model most kitchens should buy. One large cartridge sits on the cold supply line, and filtered water then comes out of every use of your existing cold tap, at 1.5 GPM.

That design has two consequences worth knowing. All the cold water you run through the kitchen tap is filtered, dishwater included, so 784 gallons can go faster than you think. And the cartridge needs three inches of clearance below it and has to sit within three feet of the cold line, per the install guide.

Its certification is the trade. IAPMO certifies it to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401, with 96.06% chlorine and chloramine reduction and above 99.3% lead reduction on the data sheet, but at the 70 ppt PFAS level rather than 20.

What Do Aquasana Replacement Filters Cost a Year?#

Between $147.98 and $183.98 a year at the one-off prices Aquasana listed on Oct 12, 2026, because every model is on a six-month schedule. The Water for Life subscription takes 15% off, so the Direct Connect cartridge drops from $91.99 to $78.19.

$183.98

One-off prices on aquasana.com, read Oct 12, 2026; the yearly total is two sets, our arithmetic. Water for Life members pay 15% less per set and get an extended warranty.

Over five years, the cartridges cost far more than the Direct Connect itself, a pattern our reverse osmosis cost breakdown charts against membrane systems. Cartridges are proprietary, and Aquasana states they cannot be recycled.

How to Install an Aquasana Under Sink Water Filter#

Aquasana says no plumber is needed, and for the Direct Connect that holds: it taps the cold line with 3/8 inch tubing and push-in elbows. The dedicated-faucet models need a 1/2 inch hole, which is where most of the work is.

A Claryum install, in five steps

  1. Pick the faucet route

Direct Connect: none needed. 2-Stage and 3-Stage models: reuse the hole of a sprayer or soap dispenser, as Aquasana suggests for renters, or drill a 1/2 inch hole. Aquasana recommends a professional for drilling.
  2. Shut off the cold supply

Close the cold angle stop under the sink and open the tap to release pressure. The supplied brass tee is 3/8 inch.
  3. Mount the head

Screw the bracket to the cabinet wall or floor with a 1/8 inch pilot hole. Leave room below the cartridges to twist them off later; the Direct Connect guide asks for three inches.
  4. Connect and check

Push the tubing in about half an inch, open the supply slowly and watch every fitting for a few minutes.
  5. Flush before drinking

Run water for 10 minutes on the dedicated-faucet models and 15 minutes on the Direct Connect to clear carbon fines. Do not drink the flush water.
Inside an open sink cabinet, two thin tubes run from a tee on the cold valve to one tall filter cartridge on a wall bracket, feeding the existing faucet above
The no-drill route: the filter taps the cold line under the sink, so filtered water comes out of the faucet you already have, with room left below to twist the cartridge off.Illustration: The Home Water Lab, drawn for this article

When Do You Need the SmartFlow Instead?#

When your water test shows something carbon cannot reach. Fluoride needs a membrane. So do nitrate, arsenic and high total dissolved solids. Aquasana's answer is the SmartFlow reverse osmosis system, a separate product with a drain line and a compact tank. Where it and the Claryum line sit among the brand's other systems is laid out in our full Aquasana lineup review.

The Claryum page itself makes the distinction: filtered water, not purified water. Membrane systems in every price band are ranked in our reverse osmosis shortlist with dated prices, and tank against tankless under the sink is covered in our under-sink RO comparison by design. If a single drinking tap is all you need and drilling is off the table, a certified countertop filter for renters is the other route.

What the Claryum Will Not Do#

It will not soften water. Aquasana designs the Claryum to keep calcium and magnesium, so scale on kettles and glass shower doors stays, and hardness is a job for a whole-home water softener. A TDS meter reading will barely move either, which is what our explainer on what a TDS reading actually measures predicts for any carbon filter.

It is also a city-water product. The Direct Connect's data sheet warns against microbiologically unsafe water or water of unknown quality without disinfection, so a private well needs testing first, as our well water treatment overview explains. And it treats one tap: whole-house chlorine is the job of a tank system such as the one in our Aquasana Rhino whole-house test, which we also set against SpringWell in the SpringWell and Aquasana head-to-head.

Prices and stock come from aquasana.com's own product data for each finish, read Oct 12, 2026. Aquasana prices switch between a sale price and an MSRP, so both are given. Certification is as stated by Aquasana and its data sheets; the WQA and IAPMO directories could not be read automatically. Yearly cartridge totals are our arithmetic.

More Claryum questions

Is Aquasana certified by NSF?

Not by NSF International for these filters. The Claryum 2-Stage, 3-Stage and 3-Stage Max Flow are certified by WQA, and the Direct Connect by IAPMO, to NSF/ANSI standards 42, 53 and 401. NSF International's listing, read Oct 12, 2026, shows only two Aquasana UV systems.

Which is better under the sink, Aquasana or Waterdrop?

They solve different problems. A Claryum is a carbon filter with no drain line; the Waterdrop G3P600 and G3P800 we track are tankless reverse osmosis units that need an outlet and send water to the drain. Choose by what your water test shows, then by budget.

What are the disadvantages of under-sink filters?

They treat one tap, they take cabinet space, and their cartridges are a recurring cost: $147.98 to $183.98 a year on the Claryum line at Oct 12, 2026 one-off prices. Most also need a dedicated faucet, which the Direct Connect avoids.

Does the Aquasana under sink filter need a plumber?

Aquasana says no, and the Direct Connect needs only a drill for the bracket, a wrench and a screwdriver. The dedicated-faucet models need a 1/2 inch hole; if you have to drill stone or a sink, Aquasana itself recommends a professional.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Aquasana under sink water filter worth it?

For city water with a chlorine, chloramine or taste complaint, yes. The Claryum Direct Connect was $124.99 on Oct 12, 2026 against a $249.99 MSRP, it keeps your existing faucet, and it is certified by IAPMO to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401. It is the wrong buy for fluoride, nitrate or hardness, which carbon does not remove, and its cartridges cost $91.99 every six months at the one-off price.

What is the difference between the Aquasana 3-Stage and the 3-Stage Max Flow?

Flow and capacity. Aquasana rates the 3-Stage at 0.5 GPM and 600 gallons per cartridge set, the Max Flow at 0.72 GPM and 800 gallons, with the same sediment pre-filter and the same WQA certification list. On Oct 12, 2026 the 3-Stage was $164.99 and in stock in brushed nickel and chrome; the Max Flow was $199.99 and out of stock in every finish. With the sale banner down on Oct 19, the two read $349.99 and $449.99.

Does the Aquasana Claryum remove fluoride?

No. Fluoride is not on the Claryum contaminant list or on its performance data sheets, which state that all contaminants reduced by the filter are listed. Aquasana's own FAQ says the Claryum makes filtered water, not purified water. For fluoride you need a reverse osmosis system such as Aquasana's SmartFlow.

How often do you replace Aquasana under sink filters?

Every six months, or sooner if you hit the gallon rating first: 500 gallons on the 2-Stage, 600 on the 3-Stage, 784 on the Direct Connect and 800 on the 3-Stage Max Flow, per Aquasana. A battery alert on the system tells you when the set is due.

What is the Aquasana AQ-6200-MB?

It is the Claryum 2-Stage under sink filter with a matte black faucet. On Oct 12, 2026 it was $134.99 against a $269.99 MSRP on aquasana.com and in stock, rated 0.5 GPM and 500 gallons per cartridge set, with the same WQA certification list as the 3-Stage models.
