GE water softeners are being sold through, not replaced. On Oct 12, 2026, every GE softener page we could open on GE Appliances' own store, nine models in all, read "This model is no longer being manufactured," and most sat under a clearance price. This review covers what that means for owners and shoppers, and where to look instead. For the full field of softener types first, start with our complete guide to home water softener systems.
The short answer
as of Oct 12, 2026Should you buy a GE water softener in 2026?
Only as a clearance bargain, and only with your eyes open. The best-known model, the 40,000-grain GXSH40V, listed at $569 on clearance against $649 on GE's store on Oct 12, 2026, with the note that it is no longer manufactured. Its warranty is 1 year on parts and labor, 3 years on the electronic monitor and 10 years on the resin tank, per GE's owner's manual.
For about the same money, the 48,000-grain Aquasure AS-HS48D cost $629.99 and the 30,000-grain APEC Hydro Express 30 $581.99 the same day, both still in production and both with longer coverage.

Key takeaways
- Nine GE softener pages read Oct 12, 2026 all said no longer being manufactured, from the GXSF30V to the Profile PNPR55W.
- GXSH40V clearance price: $569 against $649 list on GE's store (Oct 12, 2026).
- GE's manual rates the GXSH40V at 40,000 grains on 15.1 lb of salt, 9.5 gpm and up to 110 gpg of hardness.

Is GE Still Making Water Softeners?#
Not on the evidence of its own store. Every GE softener page we opened on Oct 12, 2026 carried the same sentence, "This model is no longer being manufactured," including the Wi-Fi models and the Profile Professional line. GE's softener category page still lists three models, and all three carry that line on their own pages.

GE GXSH40V Review: What the Default Softener Was#
A competent mid-size softener that did its job quietly for a decade. GE's owner's manual rates it at 40,000 grains on 15.1 lb of salt, 31,500 on 8.7 lb and 11,700 on 2.3 lb, with a 9.5 gpm service flow and limits of 110 gpg of hardness and 8 ppm of clear-water iron. It is certified by NSF International to NSF/ANSI 44 and 372.
The features that made it popular are still worth knowing if one is already in your basement. SmartSoft metering learns your water use and regenerates on demand, and GE's softener page credits it with up to 34% less salt and 35% less water during regeneration, a claim it limits to the GXSH40V and GXSH45V. A blending valve lets you dial back how soft the water gets, and a days-to-empty display warns before the salt runs out.
40,000 grains
Two limits matter more than the headline number. The manual says the softener will not remove sediment or colloidal iron, so cloudy well water needs a filter upstream. On clear-water iron, GE asks you to add 5 grains to the hardness setting for every 1 ppm, which is how 20 gpg water with 2 ppm of iron becomes a setting of 30.
Should You Buy a GE Water Softener on Clearance?#
Only if the discount is real against what an in-production softener costs that day. At Oct 12, 2026 prices it was not: the GXSH40V at $569 sat $60.99 below a 48,000-grain Aquasure and $12.99 below a 30,000-grain APEC.
GE GXSH40V, clearance
- $569, was $649 (Oct 12, 2026)
- 40,000 grains at 15.1 lb
- NSF/ANSI 44 and 372 certified
- 1 year parts and labor, out of production
Aquasure AS-HS48D, current
- $629.99 (Oct 12, 2026)
- 48,000 grains, 110 gpg max hardness
- No system certification named
- 5 years with registration, 10 on the tanks
Bottom line
The GE wins on certification and loses on capacity and coverage. Pay the $60.99 unless NSF certification is your deciding factor.
A model that has left production is not useless, but its future runs through other people's stock. Control boards and valve parts for a proprietary head depend on whatever stock GE and parts sellers still hold once a line is gone, the same risk our AO Smith softener review on model churn describes for big-box lines. If you buy a clearance GE, register it and keep the receipt with the serial number from the rim under the salt cover.
What Does the GE Water Softener Warranty Cover?#
Three terms, and only the first includes labor. GE's US warranty in the GXSH40V and GXSH45V manual covers any defective part for 1 year with labor and service included, the electronic monitor for 3 years, and the resin tank for 10 years, both of the longer terms at your expense for labor.
Warranty, read part by part
as of Oct 12, 2026- Covered from the day you buyValve, control head and parts, on the terms the warranty grants at purchase.
- Covered only if you meet a conditionRegister before a deadline, or buy and use the brand's cleaner. Miss it and coverage stops where the solid bar ends.
- TanksResin tank and brine tank, where the maker publishes a separate term. Long numbers live here.
- GE GXSH40V / GXSH45VEvery part with labor for 1 year, the electronic monitor for 3 years and the resin tank for 10, labor at your cost after year one.
- Rheem Preferred (RHS32, RHS42)conditionalParts and labor for 1 year, stretched to 5 only with Rheem's own cleaner every four months. Tanks 10 years.
- Aquasure Harmony AS-HS48DconditionalElectronics, valves and resin for 1 year, 5 in total if registered within 60 days. Labor and freight never covered.
- APEC Hydro Express 30Five-year limited warranty, as stated on the product page.
- SpringWell SS1lifetimeLifetime on tanks, valves and fittings, 5 years on the electronic head.
GE owner's manual 49-50283-6 (US warranty, page 35), read Oct 12, 2026. Rheem, Aquasure, APEC and SpringWell terms as published by each maker and read Oct 5, 2026. The 3-year GE monitor term is noted in the legend rather than drawn.
The exclusions are standard but worth reading before a claim. GE excludes improper installation, commercial use and water that is microbiologically unsafe without disinfection, and if the softener is used for anything other than private family use, the parts, monitor and tank coverage drops to 90 days.
GE Water Softener Troubleshooting: Repair or Replace?#
Most GE problems are the ordinary softener problems, and the first fixes cost nothing. Work through GE's own checklist before you book a visit, then decide on the arithmetic.
GE's first checks, from the owner's manual
Check the salt
The tank should be at least a quarter full. A hard crust over loose salt is a salt bridge; break it, then hold RECHARGE for 3 seconds to start a regeneration.Check the bypass
The bypass handle belongs in the OUT, in-service position. In bypass, the house gets hard water and the softener looks broken.Check the settings
A hardness number below your real hardness gives intermittently hard water, and a blending valve left open lets hard water through.Check the drain line
A pinched, plugged or raised drain hose stops the nozzle and venturi from drawing brine. Clean the nozzle and venturi if the brine level stays high.Read the display
A flashing Err with a blue light flashing four times a second means a control fault. Unplug the transformer, plug it back in, and wait: if the code returns within 8 minutes, call for service.
Resin beads at the faucet point to a cracked distributor, and a softener that never regenerates can mean a stuck meter turbine or an unplugged sensor wire, per the same manual. Those are repairs, and our step-by-step softener diagnosis guide covers the ones that apply to every brand.

An out-of-warranty $430 repair on a discontinued proprietary head buys time on a platform that is not coming back. Inside the first year, GE pays the labor, so call GE first.
Our rule is simple. Inside year one, it is GE's problem. After that, fix the cheap mechanical faults yourself, and when the control board or valve fails, put the money toward a current softener. Our repair-or-replace arithmetic for aging softeners runs the same numbers in more detail.

Where Do You Get GE Water Softener Parts?#
From GE's parts site first, while it still lists them. On Oct 12, 2026, GE's parts store showed the GXSH40V00 with body-parts and pump assemblies, and independent appliance-parts sellers list the same model. We could not read stock levels or prices on any of them, so we quote none.
Before you order a GE part
5 itemsSalt is the one consumable you control completely. GE's manual rules out rock salt for the dirt it carries, and our notes on choosing softener salt and potassium cover the rest.
What to Buy Instead of a GE Water Softener#
A current big-box or online softener at the same budget, or a factory-direct system if you are ready to spend more. All prices below are dated readings, and two of them are older because the retailer's page could not be read. Morton's salt-aisle softeners are left out of the table because Morton prints no price, but our Morton M30 and M45C review reads their specs and warranty if one is on your store's shelf.

Aquasure
Aquasure Harmony Series AS-HS48D Water Softener (48,000 Grain)
Best for: Households that want 48,000 grains for under $650 and a warranty that extends by registration alone
- Grain capacity
- 48,000
- Flow rate
- 15 GPM maximum (no pressure drop published)
- Max hardness
- 110 gpg
- Iron reduction
- Up to 2 ppm (10 ppm on the Fine Mesh AS-HS48FM)
- Brine tank
- 160 lb salt
- Retail
- Aquasure store and Home Depot (model AS-HS48D)
The Aquasure is the nearest like-for-like swap, with 8,000 more grains than the GXSH40V and coverage that grows to 5 years by registering alone. Its weak points are named on our cards: no system certification and only 2 ppm of iron on standard resin.
APEC Water Systems
APEC Hydro Express Water Softener 30 (SOFTENER-HE-30-FG)
Best for: Small households on moderate hardness that want five years of coverage at an entry price
- Grain capacity
- 30,000
- Flow rate
- 17.6 GPM peak
- Resin
- 1.0 cu ft standard resin
- Tank
- 9 x 48 in (55 in with head)
- Brine tank
- 13.4 x 13.4 x 31.9 in
- Retail
- APEC store and Home Depot (model SOFTENER-HE-30-FG)
For a small household, the APEC costs $581.99 with a 5-year limited warranty, the longest base term in this group. At 30,000 grains it suits moderate hardness rather than a large family; check the fit with our grain capacity calculator for your household first.
The Rheem and Whirlpool are the two names that took GE's place on big-box shelves. Our Rheem Preferred RHS32 review covers the cheapest of them, and our Whirlpool WHES44 hands-off review the one with the highest hardness and iron ratings. Both retailers' pages were unreadable when we last checked, so the prices above carry their own dates. Our ranking of softeners sold at Home Depot sets five of these side by side.

US Water Systems
US Water Systems Matrixx Smart Metered Water Softener
Best for: Buyers who want a serviceable, open-valve softener backed by real technical support, the softener plumbers buy for themselves
- Valve
- Smart metered electronic valve with Bluetooth
- Valve platform
- Open standard, rebuildable, not proprietary
- Support
- 7-day hotline staffed by water technicians
If the lesson of the GE is that a proprietary head ages badly, the Matrixx answers it with an open, rebuildable valve and lifetime coverage on the tank and resin. It costs $1,466.95 (Oct 12, 2026), more than twice a clearance GE, so it only makes sense if you plan to keep it a long time. If a dealer has quoted you a system instead, our line-by-line method for checking a dealer price applies, and our RainSoft review of the in-home sales channel shows how those quotes are built.

Our Verdict on GE Water Softeners#
What we like
- NSF/ANSI 44 and 372 certified, per GE's manual
- 40,000 grains, 9.5 gpm and up to 110 gpg on one tank
- Metered SmartSoft regeneration with a days-to-empty display
- 10 years on the resin tank
What to watch
- No longer manufactured, on every GE model page we read
- 1 year of parts and labor, labor excluded after that
- Proprietary control head on a line with no successor
- Clearance price only $60.99 under a current 48,000-grain unit (Oct 12, 2026)
How long a softener lasts depends more on the control than the tank, which is the thread running through our softener lifespan guide. Unsure which type your water needs? Take the system quiz for a shortlist in about a minute, and price the fitting with our installation cost breakdown by job type.
We did not bench-test a GE softener. Specifications and warranty terms come from GE's own manual; prices are dated readings from each maker's store. Rheem and Whirlpool prices date from Aug 28 and Sep 12, 2026, the last readings their retailers allowed. The production dates for the GXSH40V come from GE's parts page as read on Aug 28, 2026.
More GE softener questions
What do the GE model numbers mean?
The digits are the rated capacity in thousands of grains: GXSF30V is 30,000, GXSH40V 40,000, GXSH45V 45,000. The W-suffixed GXSH35W and GXSH45W are the Wi-Fi Smart models, and PNPR45W and PNPR55W are the Profile Professional line. All nine models we checked on Oct 12, 2026 were marked no longer manufactured.
What salt should I use in a GE softener?
GE's manual recommends nugget, pellet or coarse solar salt and rules out rock salt, which carries dirt and sediment. Keep the tank at least a quarter full and break any salt bridge you find.
Can a GE softener handle well water with iron?
Up to 8 ppm of clear-water iron on the GXSH40V and 10 ppm on the GXSH45V, per GE's manual, with 5 grains added to the hardness setting for each 1 ppm. It will not remove sediment or colloidal iron, and the manual notes that Wisconsin requires additional treatment above 5 ppm of clear-water iron.
Which is better, a GE or a Whirlpool water softener?
For a new purchase in 2026, the Whirlpool, mainly because it is still sold: the WHES44 offers 44,000 grains with 140 gpg and 12 ppm iron ratings at $619 as last read on Sep 12, 2026. A working GE already installed is not worth replacing just for that.
Frequently asked questions
Does GE still make water softeners?
Not that we could find. On Oct 12, 2026, all nine GE softener pages we opened on geappliances.com, from the 30,000-grain GXSF30V to the 55,000-grain Profile PNPR55W, carried the line This model is no longer being manufactured, most of them under a Sale Clearance price. GE has published no announcement about the category that we could locate, so read it as a lineup being sold through, model by model.
What is the life expectancy of a GE water softener?
GE publishes no service life. What it does put in writing, in the GXSH40V and GXSH45V owner's manual, is 1 year on every part with labor included, 3 years on the electronic monitor and 10 years on the resin tank, with labor at your expense after the first year. A softener usually outlives its electronics, so the 3-year term is the one to plan around.
How do I reset my GE water softener?
For an Err display on the GXSH40V and GXSH45V, GE's manual says to unplug the transformer briefly and plug it back in; the motor may run for several minutes, and if the fault persists the code returns within 8 minutes. To restore factory settings, hold MODE/SET until the display changes twice, press UP until SoS flashes, press MODE/SET again, then re-enter the time and hardness.
Is the GE GXSH40V worth buying on clearance?
Only if the price undercuts a current model by a wide margin. GE listed it at $569 on clearance against $649 on Oct 12, 2026, while the 48,000-grain Aquasure AS-HS48D cost $629.99 the same day with up to 5 years of coverage after registration. The GE's 1-year parts-and-labor warranty and out-of-production status are what you trade the $60.99 against.
Where can I buy GE water softener parts?
GE's own parts site still lists body and pump assemblies for the GXSH40V00 (Oct 12, 2026), and independent appliance-parts sellers list the same model. Match the full model and serial number from the decal on the rim under the salt cover, as GE's manual instructs, before you order anything.
