SpringWell WS1 Review 2026: Air Injection Iron Filter Tested on Paper

SpringWell WS1 review: $2,100 on Nov 2, 2026, rated for 7 ppm iron, 8 ppm hydrogen sulfide and 1 ppm manganese. Where air injection stops and what's next.

The SpringWell WS1 is the best chemical-free iron filter for a well that stays inside three numbers: 7 ppm iron, 8 ppm hydrogen sulfide and 1 ppm manganese. It costs $2,100 on SpringWell's store (Nov 2, 2026), runs on an air pocket and a greensand bed, and has nothing to refill. Past any one of those numbers it is the wrong purchase, and this review says what to buy instead. Where it sits in the full treatment chain is laid out in our guide to treating a private well from test to tap.

The short answer

as of Oct 12, 2026

Is the SpringWell WS1 worth it?

Yes, if your lab report reads 7 ppm iron, 8 ppm hydrogen sulfide and 1 ppm manganese or less, at a pH of 6.5 to 10. At $2,100 (Nov 2, 2026) it oxidizes all three with trapped air, catches them in greensand rated 10+ years, and backwashes itself nightly with no chemical to buy. Above those ratings, a peroxide injection system rated to 20 ppm iron or a Katalox build rated to 30 ppm is the right tool.

Key takeaways

  • $2,100 on Nov 2, 2026, against a $2,625 regular price, as during the 20% Labor Day sale on Sep 2; $2,231.25 under a 15% banner on Oct 12.
  • Rated to remove up to 7 ppm iron, 8 ppm hydrogen sulfide and 1 ppm manganese, at pH 6.5 to 10 and 25 to 80 psi.
  • SpringWell holds every well order until a $134.25 lab test (Oct 12 price) comes back, so the real checkout starts near $2,234 at the Nov 2, 2026 tank price.
  • Past 7 ppm iron, US Water Systems rates its Matrixx inFusion to 20 ppm, and a Katalox build is sold rated to 30 ppm.

Is the SpringWell WS1 Any Good?#

For the water it's rated for, yes. It's one tank, no chemical, no cartridge, and a nightly backwash, at a price that sits under every peroxide system we priced the same day.

We didn't bench-test it. This review rests on SpringWell's product, warranty and shipping pages, read Oct 12, 2026, the published ratings of the systems it competes with, and our arithmetic. SpringWell's page shows 4.7 stars from 460 reviews, the same count it showed on Sep 2, 2026. The Better Business Bureau told a different story when we read it on Aug 28, 2026: no accreditation and 1.63 out of 5 from 27 customer reviews.

How Does the WS1 Remove Iron, Sulfur and Manganese?#

With air, then sand, then a flush. Dissolved iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide meet a pocket of air at the top of the tank, turn into solid particles, and get caught in the media bed below.

The WS1 cycle, in SpringWell's own four steps

  1. Oxidation

Water falls through a pocket of air held at the top of the tank. Oxygen turns dissolved iron, sulfur and manganese into solid particles.
  2. Filtration

Greensand fusion media catches the oxidized particles before they reach the house.
  3. Backwash

Every night a scheduled cycle reverses the flow, flushes the captured particles down a drain and refreshes the air pocket, automatically.
  4. Distribution

Treated water goes on to every fixture. There is no holding tank on the outlet side.

Nothing in that loop is consumed. That's the whole case for air injection, and it's why the running cost after installation is the backwash water a private well isn't billed for. The mechanism against greensand and Katalox, side by side, is in our comparison of air injection, greensand and Katalox media.

Air does the oxidizing, the media bed does the catching, and a nightly flush empties the bed. Nothing in the loop is used up.Illustration: The Home Water Lab, drawn for this article

What Are the SpringWell WS1's Limits?#

Three published ceilings and a handful of conditions. SpringWell's page reads "removes up to 7 PPM" iron, "up to 8 PPM" hydrogen sulfide and "up to 1 PPM" manganese, at a pH of 6.5 to 10 and an operating pressure of 25 to 80 psi.

For scale, the EPA's secondary standards put iron at 0.3 mg/L and manganese at 0.05 mg/L, the levels where staining and taste start (read Oct 12, 2026; one ppm equals one mg/L in water). So the WS1 covers iron up to roughly 23 times the staining line and manganese up to 20 times its line. If you plan a UV stage for bacteria, it goes after the WS1, never before, as our Rhino Well Water with UV breakdown explains. The chart below sets its ratings against three systems built for heavier wells.

  • Matrixx inFusionperoxideUS Water Systems' peroxide injection ahead of catalytic carbon, also aimed at iron and sulfur bacteria. $3,294.95 for the 10 GPM size on Oct 12, 2026.

Bars are each seller's published rating, scaled within each panel, not measured performance. Dashed line: the SpringWell WS1's ceiling. Sources: springwellwater.com and uswatersystems.com product pages read Oct 12, 2026; midatlanticwater.net SpringWell review, updated Oct 2, 2026.

The WS1 has the lowest iron ceiling of the four, and only one system here rates manganese lower. A lab result to the right of the dashed line, in any panel, is a well SpringWell doesn't rate this tank for.

Then the conditions. The page says "Do not use where water is microbiologically unsafe," so a coliform-positive well needs disinfection first. SpringWell makes no iron bacteria claim for the WS1 and sells a separate Tannin Removal System, so neither problem belongs on this tank.

Two published details also disagree with each other. The spec table lists the WS1 at 12 GPM for one to four bathrooms, while the size guide on the same page puts the "Core" model at 9 GPM for up to three. We report both and size on the lower one.

What If My Well Has More Than 7 ppm Iron?#

Change technology, not size. The WS4 carries the same 7, 8 and 1 ppm ratings with more flow, so a bigger SpringWell tank solves nothing. These are the documented routes, with the sellers' own ratings and prices read Oct 12, 2026.

The Katalox line comes from Mid Atlantic Water, a Fleck installer whose SpringWell review was updated Oct 2, 2026, so read it as a competitor's figure. US Water Systems also aims the Matrixx inFusion at iron and sulfur bacteria, which an air pocket doesn't treat.

SpringWell now sells a second route of its own. Its Chemical Injection System, $1,268.75 on Oct 12, 2026, injects chlorine and is pitched as killing iron bacteria while oxidizing iron, sulfur and manganese, but its page publishes no iron ceiling at all. Without a number, we can't place it on the chart. Ask for one against your lab report before buying it as the answer to a heavy well.

Stay with air injection

  • Iron 7 ppm or less, H2S 8 or less, manganese 1 or less
  • No coliform and no iron bacteria on the report
  • You want nothing to refill and no dosing pump

Move to injection or Katalox

  • Iron over 7 ppm, or manganese over 1
  • Sulfur over 8 ppm, or sulfur bacteria
  • You accept a chemical to restock, or a pro install

Bottom line

The lab report picks the column. Shopping across it is how a well ends up with two iron filters.

When the staining comes from rust flakes and grit rather than dissolved iron, the fix is upstream and cheaper, which is the angle of our picks for orange rust stains on well water.

SpringWell WS1 Price: What You Actually Pay#

$2,100 for the tank (Nov 2, 2026), and $2,234.25 at checkout once the required test is added at its Oct 12 price. The bypass valve SpringWell puts in the cart by default brings it to $2,293.04.

Our arithmetic on SpringWell's prices: the tank read Nov 2, 2026, the test and bypass valve Oct 12, 2026, shipping free. The installation range is the per-unit figure used in our well filtration budget.

The price moves with SpringWell's banner. We read $2,231.25 on Aug 28, Sep 12, Oct 9 and Oct 12, 2026, and $2,100 on Sep 2, during a 20% Labor Day sale, and again on Nov 2, 2026 under a new 20% banner. The $5,100 strikethrough the page carried in August was gone on Oct 12. The whole stack, iron filter to UV, is budgeted in our cost breakdown for a complete well treatment stack, and labor is itemized in what plumbers charge to install a treatment tank.

WS1 or WS4: Which Size Do You Need?#

The WS1 for most houses, the WS4 when flow is the problem. The WS4 is $2,520 (Nov 2, 2026), a 13-inch tank rated at 20 GPM for four or more bathrooms, with the same contaminant ratings.

Size on the lower of SpringWell's two published WS1 figures, 9 GPM, if your house runs several showers at once. Peak flow arithmetic works the same way it does for a softener, which our walkthrough on sizing a softener to your household shows step by step.

Do You Need a Softener With the WS1?#

Only if your report shows hardness, and on a well it usually does. The WS1 doesn't soften, and it's the stage that keeps iron off a softener's resin, so it goes first in line.

The softener half is examined in our hands-off look at the SpringWell SS1 softener, and the alternatives for iron-bearing wells are ranked in our softener picks for wells with iron and sulfur.

Installation and Upkeep#

A confident DIYer can do it, because it's two connections, a drain and an outlet. The box holds the tank, the electronic head, MNPT fittings, a drain line, a power supply and a hose clamp.

Have these ready before the WS1 ships

6 items

That last line matters on sandy wells, and our guide to whole-house sediment screens covers where one goes relative to the pressure tank. For heavier grit loads, see the sediment filters ranked for well water.

Upkeep is the yearly test. The CDC already advises testing a private well every year, and the WS1 only works while your numbers stay under its ceilings, so add iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide to that panel as part of a yearly well testing routine.

Warranty, Returns and Reputation#

The warranty is long on the tank and short on the electronics. SpringWell covers the tank for life against defects, gives the electronic head 5 years, and limits coverage to the registered owner in the original home, void if the system moves.

Returns are where the 6-month money-back promise narrows. SpringWell accepts returns within six months only if the system is unused and uninstalled, charges a 10% restocking fee on approved non-defective returns, and takes back installed systems only when it judges them defective. SpringWell doesn't name its valve's maker on the page; an installer's review in July 2026 identified it as a Chandler Systems head, and its Oct 2 update no longer does. How these terms compare with Aquasana's is in our warranty and return terms of SpringWell against Aquasana, and the same company's city-water filter gets the same treatment in our teardown of the SpringWell CF1 on paper.

What we like

  • No chemical, no cartridge, greensand rated 10+ years
  • Handles iron, hydrogen sulfide and manganese in one tank
  • $2,100 (Nov 2, 2026), under every peroxide system we priced
  • Lifetime tank warranty; a lab test is required before shipping

What to watch

  • Rated to 7 ppm iron and 1 ppm manganese, modest for heavy wells
  • Electronic head covered 5 years; valve maker not named
  • Returns only uninstalled, with a 10% restocking fee
  • Two different flow figures on its own product page

Prices come from each store's product data and displayed price, read Oct 12, 2026 (SpringWell's re-read Nov 2, 2026), except the Katalox build (Mid Atlantic Water, updated Oct 2, 2026) and the BBB profile (read Aug 28, 2026). Every rating is the seller's own. We did not install or bench-test any system on this page.

More SpringWell WS1 questions

What is the difference between the SpringWell WS1 and WS4?

Size and flow. The WS1 is a 10-inch tank listed at 12 GPM for one to four bathrooms ($2,100), the WS4 a 13-inch tank at 20 GPM for four or more ($2,520), both on Nov 2, 2026. The iron, sulfur and manganese ratings are identical.

Does the SpringWell WS1 need electricity?

Yes, for the control head. A power supply is in the box, and SpringWell publishes no voltage figure on the page, so plan an outlet near the tank.

Is a water test really required to buy the WS1?

Yes. The $134.25 Well Water Test: Level 1 + Bacteria is listed as a required add-on, and SpringWell says it holds all well system orders until the results are complete. It lists 53+ contaminants including heavy metals, nitrates and bacteria.

Can the WS1 handle iron bacteria?

SpringWell makes no iron bacteria claim for it. Its own Chemical Injection System and US Water Systems' Matrixx inFusion are both sold with iron bacteria in their descriptions.

Frequently asked questions

Is the SpringWell WS1 a good iron filter?

Yes, inside its ratings. SpringWell rates it to remove up to 7 ppm iron, 8 ppm hydrogen sulfide and 1 ppm manganese with an air pocket and a greensand bed, no chemicals and nothing to refill, for $2,100 on Nov 2, 2026. Above any of those three numbers it is the wrong machine, and SpringWell's own warranty says so: installing a system on water beyond its recommended specification voids the coverage.

How much does the SpringWell WS1 cost?

$2,100 on SpringWell's store on Nov 2, 2026, against a $2,625 regular price, under a 20% site-wide banner; it read $2,231.25 under a 15% banner on Oct 12. The checkout also adds a required well water test ($134.25 on Oct 12) and a $58.79 bypass valve you can remove, so the box comes to about $2,293 before installation. It read the same $2,100 during a 20% Labor Day sale on Sep 2, 2026.

Does the SpringWell WS1 remove the rotten egg smell?

Up to 8 ppm of hydrogen sulfide, per SpringWell's product page. The same air pocket that oxidizes iron oxidizes the gas, and the nightly backwash flushes what the bed caught. Above 8 ppm, or when sulfur bacteria are involved, a peroxide or chlorine injection system is the documented route.

Does the SpringWell WS1 soften water?

No. It removes iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide, and hardness passes straight through. If your lab report also shows hardness, the WSSS1 pairs the WS1 with SpringWell's salt softener for $2,940 on Nov 2, 2026, with the iron filter first so the resin is protected.

What maintenance does an air injection iron filter need?

On the WS1, very little. It backwashes itself every night and refreshes its air pocket in the same cycle, SpringWell rates the greensand fusion media at 10+ years, and there is no chemical or cartridge to buy. Your jobs are a yearly well test to confirm the numbers haven't drifted past the ratings, and keeping the drain line clear.
