None of this requires tools beyond a broom handle, a bucket and mild dish soap. How Do You Check and Refill the Salt?#
Open the lid of the brine tank (the shorter tank with the big lid) and look. Two rules cover it:
- Keep the tank at least one-quarter to one-half full, and always keep the salt level above the water line you can see in the tank.

What Is a Salt Bridge and How Do You Break It?#
A salt bridge is a hard crust of salt that forms a dome inside the brine tank, with an air gap underneath. From the top the tank looks full, but the salt is no longer touching the water below, so no brine is made and the softener stops softening while looking perfectly normal.
The fix is deliberately low-tech.

While you are in there, check for salt mushing: dissolved salt that has recrystallized into a sludge at the bottom of the tank. Mush blocks the brine draw the same way a bridge does, but poking will not fix it; that calls for a tank cleaning. How Do You Clean the Brine Tank?#
Once a year is the safe habit, and it is easiest when the salt is nearly used up.

When Do You Need Resin Cleaner?#
The resin bed is where softening actually happens, and its enemy is iron. Even the trace iron common in city water slowly coats resin beads; well water can foul a bed in months. Fouled resin shows up as fading soft-water feel, orange staining that comes back, and salt use that no longer matches results.
The fix is a resin cleaner: iron-removal formulas sold under names like Rust Out and Iron Out at any hardware store or on Amazon for a few dollars a bottle. Follow the label; the usual pattern is adding it to the brine well and running a regeneration, quarterly on iron-prone water. It is cheap insurance on a resin bed that costs hundreds to replace. - Bypass valveSends water straight to the house. Every service call starts here: without it, touching the softener means shutting off the whole home.
- Control valveThe head that meters water and decides when to regenerate. A metered head counts gallons, a timer head only counts days, which is why metered heads use less salt.
- Riser tube and upper distributorWater enters at the top, works down through the bed, then returns up the centre tube. Screens at both ends keep resin in the tank and out of your plumbing.
- Resin bedThe working part. Beads loaded with sodium trade it for hardness as water passes. Capacity is rated in grains, which is what 32,000 or 48,000 on the box refers to.
- Drain line, with air gapBackwash water and spent brine leave here. Plumbing code wants a physical gap above the drain so nothing can siphon back into the softener.

- Brine tankHolds the salt. Its job is to make brine for the recharge, not to add salt to your water: the two only meet inside the resin tank, during regeneration.
- Brine well and safety floatThe float caps how much water can enter the tank. It is what stops a stuck valve from putting the brine tank on your floor.
- Brine lineCarries brine to the valve during the draw, and fresh water back to the tank during refill. One tube, both directions.

What Does the Bypass Valve Do (and Why Exercise It)?#
The bypass valve, usually a lever or knob where the softener meets your plumbing, routes water around the softener so you can service the unit without shutting off the house. You will need it for tank cleaning, repairs, and any time you want untreated water (some owners bypass for heavy outdoor watering, since softened water spends salt on plants that do not care).
Should You Change the Regeneration Settings?#
Once a year, or whenever the household changes, sanity-check two numbers in the control head.
- Hardness setting. The head should be programmed with your actual water hardness in grains per gallon. Test it rather than guessing: strips are cheap, and city numbers move. - Regeneration trigger. Regeneration, one full cycle
- Backwashto drainFlow reverses and runs up through the bed, lifting the resin, flushing out grit and iron, and unpacking a bed that has compacted under months of downward flow.
- Brine draw and slow rinseto drainThe valve pulls brine out of the salt tank and moves it slowly through the resin. Sodium floods the exchange sites, the captured calcium and magnesium are pushed off and leave with the waste water.

Most control valves run the cycle in the early hours, when nobody is drawing water. A single tank cannot soften and recharge at the same time, so water drawn mid-cycle comes through untreated. That, and nothing else, is the argument for twin-tank systems.
What About the Sediment Pre-Filter?#
